Begin with the decision
A dashboard should answer a recurring decision, not simply display available data. Define the decision owner, cadence, acceptable delay and action that follows each signal.
- Name every metric owner.
- Document the calculation and source.
- Set thresholds that trigger a specific response.
Separate outcomes from drivers
Revenue, margin and retention describe outcomes. Pipeline coverage, delivery cycle time and support backlog are drivers teams can influence earlier. A useful view connects both levels.
Build trust through reconciliation
Teams act on data when they understand its freshness and can reconcile it to operational systems. Show reporting periods, source definitions and exceptions instead of presenting false precision.
